Designing the future of ticketing
Flytoget, Norway’s airport express train, is known for its speed and service. When they set out to build a new generation of ticket vending machines (TVMs), the goal wasn’t just to replace hardware, it was to rethink the entire experience of buying a train ticket.
As the design lead on the project, I was responsible for shaping the full user journey — from prototyping the first pilot to refining the interface and interaction patterns in close collaboration with engineers and the Flytoget team.
This has been a true end-to-end journey: I’ve been involved from the earliest conversations with hardware suppliers, through the design of the pilot version back in 2021, to writing tender documents and leading the ongoing design process.
We’ve reimagined what a ticket machine can be, from UI and physical flow to digital receipts and hardware integration. Our latest pilot, tested at Oslo Airport, features a completely paperless ticketing flow: users receive their ticket via QR code or SMS.
In 2023, the project scaled significantly with a 22 MNOK contract to deliver 29 new machines across all stations. And in 2025, our work was recognized internationally as a finalist in the Transport Ticketing Awards for Supplier Innovation.
Along the way, I’ve collaborated closely with stakeholders Flytoget and other stakeholders, balancing accessibility, security, and business needs with our core goal: to make travel smoother for everyone.
My role
• Design lead from pilot to production
• UX/UI design for a fully custom ticketing flow
• User testing and iterative improvements
• Collaboration with engineers, product owners, and the client
• Accessibility and performance-minded design choices
